So when I accepted the invitation to see Pedal Performing Arts’ version of this musical I really had no great expectations. However, this dynamic local young company produced what turned out to be a quite superb performance of the critically acclaimed ‘Our House’. The show tells the story of Joe Casey who, on the night of his sixteenth birthday takes Sarah, the girl of his dreams, out on their first date. In an effort to impress her with bravado he breaks into a building site. The Police turn up, at which point Joe’s life splits into two: the good Joe and the bad Joe, who embarks on a life of crime. This reminded me of the film ‘Sliding Doors’ in which a life can be completely changed by either passing through a door or not. Thought-provoking stuff for this 40 strong cast of local youngsters to tackle but wow! They certainly pulled it off and full credit must go to the Pedal production team. The show had terrific pace and energy and director Kenny Frier, Musical Director Carole King and choreographer Sarah Pinkney gave the cast and audience a show to remember. The young cast ranging from 6 to 16 appeared so well drilled in the Madness-style dance moves and terrific ensemble singing supported by a quite brilliant four piece band. The company number ‘Baggy Trousers’ was a real high energy treat and ‘It must be love’ soulfully performed by ‘Sarah’ (Beth Webb-Strong) another highlight. Young Barnaby Wilson did a great job as hero and villain Joe. Other accomplished performances by Dan Badrick (Emmo), Thomas Kershaw-Green (Lewis), Laurence Hodgson (Reecey) and the menacing Chris Dancer (Pressman) all acted their young socks off. But the real star of the show was Scott Brookes as ‘Dad’ – an amazing acting performance from a young man who possesses great stage presence. All of the young ensemble played their many roles with a confidence and an enthusiasm sometimes missing from some senior am-dram productions. All in all a great show produced and acted by an exciting young group and an evening that will live in the memory for a long time. I look forward to next February’s production of ‘Seussical – The Musical’ with bated breath. Paul Woodstock
