Burnt out childrens' TV star, Jack Davenport, is in the middle of a long panto season but is depressed with the realisation that it is his side kick Tommy the cat (a puppet) that is the better known and loved of the duo. Jack is expendable and his agent is keen to buy him out and bring in a fresh young actress, Jessica, to operate the puppet. Jack is initially sceptical but warms to the girl's enthusiasm. However Jack's other partnership is also on the rocks. His long suffering wife has finally left him. Jack realises that they share something in common - they are both the forgotten half of a double act. Jack makes a decision to save Jessica from the fate that has befallen him and to make amends with his wife. He ditches the cat throwing away his shallow celebrity lifestyle and regains real life.
